Joerg Tiede: “Academic Freedom in the Age of Trump”

Joerg Tiede, National AAUP Senior Program Officer, addresses a group of faculty at this UConn-AAUP event. His presentation focused on witnessing the legislative and gubernatorial attacks on individual faculty members, course offerings, governing boards, the institution of tenure, and the institutional autonomy of colleges and universities. In addressing the Campus Free Speech Executive order, Joerg cites the AAUP statement: “Given the important role of colleges and universities in debate, dissent, and the free exchange of ideas, the AAUP strongly supports freedom of expression on campus and the rights of faculty and students to invite speakers of their choosing. We oppose, however, any legislation that interferes with the institutional autonomy of colleges and universities by undermining the role of faculty, administrations and governing boards institutional decision-making…”
