Faculty Compensation Policy
During the recent negotiations, UConn-AAUP and the administration signed a Side Letter agreeing to continue discussion on the 12/12ths rule as it applies to full-time faculty compensation after negotiations. If the discussion did not resolve the issue to either party’s satisfaction, the UConn-AAUP may demand to bargain the issue. On Wednesday, November 30, 2022, a message from the Provost indicated that the “Policy on Extra Compensation for Full-Time Faculty in AAUP” was being replaced with the revised “Faculty Compensation Policy.” This is in violation of the Side Letter agreement, which does not indicate that the administration can unilaterally implement their revisions, and it violates Article 8 of the collective bargaining agreement, which states that “written policies and procedures impacting upon mandatory subjects of bargaining may be changed only by agreement of the Board of Trustees and the UConn-AAUP.”
This is a fundamental shift in the practice of the UConn administration and one which should be of great concern for faculty. UConn-AAUP is addressing this issue through appropriate processes. Second, the administration has not been responsive to our concerns that the proposed revisions may reduce faculty compensation currently provided in Article 38 Summer and Winter Compensation.
