Dear UConn-AAUP,
I hope your new year is off to a great start. I plan to send occasional updates on some of the initiatives that we have planned for the Union in the coming months. First off, as we are all aware, the pandemic forced us to pivot and rely on remote meetings. These meetings, while having advantages in practicality, are not conducive to the sort of informal banter and fellowship enjoyed before and after the business portion.
In an effort to forge greater collegiality and fellowship, we organized a few in-person social events in the fall. We hosted a lunch in the Student Union Ballroom in October—our first in three years. An Open House event in November at our office was a great time. Officers and other members came from across various campuses to meet and socialize with friends and colleagues at our AAUP office. (We almost had to flicker the lights to tell people to head home). In late October I joined other AAUP officers on a meeting with our members at the Hartford campus; and staff and leaders met with members in Stamford later in the week. I look forward to meeting with members in Waterbury and Avery Point campuses this spring. Finally, we hosted social gatherings at local establishments in Hartford and Storrs; and we are excited to continue that new tradition.
We, the leadership and staff of the AAUP, are proud to serve our membership’s interests. To that end, we hope to forge a healthy and collegial work environment that complements our efforts with negotiations, workplace policy work, and other facets of our mission. Announcements and invitations to future events can be found in AAUP emails from our office. I look forward to seeing more of the membership, and welcoming new members into the fold.
I wish you all a successful semester!
Sincerely,
Jeffrey O.G. Ogbar
