UConn-AAUP Testimony to the Appropriations Committee

Last week, UConn leadership presented to the State Appropriations Committee regarding the $70 M shortfall in the FY25 budget with a request for more permanent funding. UConn-AAUP came out in large numbers to show concern for the leadership’s 5-year Financial Plan to compensate for the budget shortfall and to also to fully fund the UConn budget request moving forward. Over 185 members wrote testimony voicing their concerns. We also had four members that gave testimony in person voicing their personal experiences and the significance of the cuts on their departments/areas. Special shout out to the UConn-AAUP Organizing Committee for sending information out to all members and encouraging people to submit testimony.

UConn-AAUP Day of Action at Board of Trustees Meeting
On Wednesday Feb. 28, 2024, at 9:00 am, the Board of Trustees will hold their monthly meeting at the Wilber Cross, North Reading Room. UConn-AAUP, GEU-UAW, UCPEA, and AFSCME will be holding a joint day-of-action at the Storrs campus. Join us & help continue to fight for a fully funded UConn budget.

Here are 3 ways you can support the effort:

1) Spread the Word Send a message to your department email lists, text our digital flyer to your friends and colleagues, post to social media!

2) Show up! Join our events at 8:15am, 9am, 10:30am, or 11:30am Wednesday. Sign-up here to let us know when you can attend. People show our strength! UConn-AAUP members need to clearly convey to the BoT that the current financial plan does not put students first and will greatly impact teaching, learning and research. We also need to have accountability and transparency from UConn administration, and we need to continue to advocate for more permanent funding from the state legislature.

3) Share 10:30am-11:30am event details with students! Our Teach-in & Activism Event (10:30am McHugh 101) is aimed at spreading awareness of the proposed budget cuts with undergrads and giving opportunities to act immediately. We will have UConn faculty and grad students presenting info on the budget cuts and their potential impact to students. We’ll have tools to take action on this issue. And we invite everyone who wants a fully funded UConn to join us as we march from McHugh to Wilbur Cross at 11:30am. We want to make sure the Board of Trustees hears us again before their meeting adjourns.
