Update of State Funding:
Dear Colleagues,
This past Spring, the state of Connecticut promised UConn-AAUP members the same raises as other state workers. However, as has been its past practice, the state did not appropriate sufficient funds to cover the cost of raises for higher-education institutions. It expects UConn, UCHC, and CSU to cover some portion of the raises with money from other sources.
Just to be clear – our raises are not in danger. The state and the university agreed to them and are legally obligated to provide them. But the money has to come from somewhere.
The governor’s office promised during budget deliberations that the state budget would cause “no harm” to students, employees, or the services provided by UConn and other institutions of higher education. However, given the damage that is already metastasizing through the university due to UConn’s ongoing budget crisis, under-funding our raises will absolutely cause additional harm to the university. The state should not use our raises to force more cuts when austerity is already undermining educational quality.
We are coordinating with other state unions on a response. We’ve met with Governor Lamont, the governor’s Chief of Staff, and the Secretary of the Office of Policy and Management and told them that we intend to hold them to their “no harm” promise. We highlighted to them the negative effects of budget cuts that are already rippling across UConn, UCHC, and the CSU schools, and we’ll have additional meetings in the near future. The state has money to help close the funding gap (e.g., the Reserve for Salary Adjustment Fund) – it just has to choose to use it.

“Solidarity Summer March” at the Boom Box Parade
Members of all AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions and chapters are invited to join Willimantic area siblings to march in the annual “Boom Box Parade” — the region’s largest Independence Day celebration.
We’re marching as a cohesive, unified group for a variety of unit-specific issues.
The Windham Federation of Professional Nurses, AFT Local 5041 is marching to send the message to Hartford HealthCare (HHC) that members of the bargaining unit deserve a fair contract.
UCPEA/AFT Local 3695, UConn-AAUP/AFT Local 6746 and CSU-AAUP/AFT Local 6745 members are marching to hold Governor Ned Lamont accountable to fully funding the state’s public colleges and universities.
Members are encouraged to wear their local union t-shirts and carry signs during the event, reinforcing our commitment to a united front when it comes to these issues and more.
We will be meeting to the left of the exit to Jillson Square. Look for the blue balloons and AFT Connecticut Flags. Our plan is to join the line-up behind the NAACP Windham/Willimantic CT Chapter.
