UConn-AAUP Legal Clinic for International UConn Community Members: May 16
The UConn-AAUP has partnered with Hartford-based immigration attorney Erin O’Neil at Norte Law for a one-day legal clinic from on Friday, May 16 from 10am to 3pm in Student Union rooms 320/321. O’Neil will be overviewing recent developments in US immigration law from 10:00-10:30 and then will be meeting with individuals at UConn for one-on-one consultations to answer questions related to their specific legal status in the United States.
These consultations are free of charge courtesy of the UConn-AAUP International Scholars Defense Fund. Please make an appointment for a consultation by calling the AAUP office at (860)-487-0450.
There will also be a guardian ad litem/power of attorney workshop running between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm at the same location for those interested in prepping a legal emergency document kit.
University Senate Resolution
Many thanks for all the members who showed up this past Monday at the University Senate and advocated in support of a firm response to our federal government’s unprecedented assaults on the academy. Much gratitude to our Senators for making a bold statement in passing a number of resolutions on mutual academic defense and our shared values.
Senators passed three resolutions:
(1) a resolution affirming shared values with other Public Land Grant universities,
(2) a strong, amended “Resolution to Work in Mutual Defense of Academic Freedom, Free Expression, Institutional Integrity, and the Research Enterprise”
(3) a resolution from the floor raised by the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) subcommittee urging President Maric to join other University Presidents in signing the “Call for Constructive Engagement” letter of the AAC&U.
The first two passed by unanimous voice vote. The text of all resolutions can be viewed here.
The Senate meeting this Monday demonstrated a growing resolve on this campus to openly confront the current federal crisis together. We will all need to stay informed and engaged in the seasons ahead.

UConn-AAUP Ad-Hoc Committee on International and Immigrant Workers Update
Members from the committee met with Attorney General William Tong to discuss support and advocacy on behalf of our members and the wider UConn community. Given the changing landscape, the group stressed the importance of the state continuing to advocate for and support our international workers. The committee is committed to ensuring protections and supports for the UConn community and will be continuing to meet over the summer.
The UConn-AAUP has set up the International Scholar Defense Fund to defray the cost of legal consultation and legal representation for students and AAUP bargaining unit members at UConn who have questions, concerns, or emergencies regarding their immigration and citizenship status. We have compiled a list of Legal Firms that have been vetted and are available for students and our members. The application for this fund and the list of legal offices can be found here.
